Our Story

Raising the Par Since 1963

Nestled in the rolling green hills of Balgowan, Bosch Hoek has been a cornerstone of the KZN Midlands for over six decades. What began as a modest course carved out of farmland has blossomed into one of the region's most beloved destinations — where heritage meets modern luxury and every visit feels like coming home.

Our Heritage

1852

The Original Bosch Hoek Farm

Bosch Hoek is first granted as farmland in the KZN Midlands during the early Voortrekker settlement period. Surrounded by mist-covered hills, flowing streams, and indigenous bush, the farm earns the name Bosch Hoek — 'Bush Corner'.

A Changing Midlands Landscape

Bosch Hoek is gradually subdivided through successive ownership as the surrounding region develops into the distinctive Midlands landscape known today — rolling hills, timber plantations, farming traditions, and small village communities including Curry's Post, Balgowan, and Nottingham Road.

1951

Punch Barlow's Vision

Industrialist Charles Sydney 'Punch' Barlow acquires Bosch Hoek and begins transforming the property into a model Midlands farm spanning more than 4 000 acres — introducing advanced farming methods, developing trout dams, and preserving indigenous yellowwood trees.

The River Club Connection

An important connection forms between Bosch Hoek and Johannesburg's prestigious River Club. As a founding member, Punch Barlow commissions celebrated golf course architect Bob Grimsdell to design a private nine-hole course at Bosch Hoek.

1963

The First Drive

The first golf shot at Bosch Hoek is played. Originally created as a private course for Barlow, his family, and invited guests, it quickly becomes known for its peaceful atmosphere, tree-lined fairways, and understated charm.

A New Chapter Begins

Following Punch Barlow's passing, Bosch Hoek becomes the property of his stepson, Peter Gallo. Under Gallo's stewardship, the course retains its private character while the broader vision for Bosch Hoek slowly begins to evolve.

1990

Bosch Hoek Opens to the Public

Peter Gallo officially launches Bosch Hoek Golf & Country Estate, opening the once-private course to visitors for the first time. The residential estate is intentionally limited to just thirty-five homes to preserve the peaceful atmosphere.

Elevating the Course

Bosch Hoek undergoes one of the most significant upgrades in its history. The greens are converted to Bentgrass, extensive course improvements are completed, and the clubhouse facilities are modernised — all while preserving Bob Grimsdell's original layout.

The Lodge Opens

Originally the old polo change rooms, Bosch Hoek Lodge officially opens on 1 November 2017. Created in response to growing demand from visiting golfers and Midlands travellers, the Lodge transforms Bosch Hoek into a complete stay-and-play destination.

Today

A Living Midlands Heritage

Bosch Hoek remains one of the Midlands' most quietly distinctive destinations. Nguni cattle graze alongside reedbuck, bushbuck, grey crowned cranes, and fish eagles. More than sixty years after the first golf shot was played, Bosch Hoek is still a place where guests come to slow down and reconnect.
